Practice! | Photography Class

A year long online course with Katrina Kennedy of CaptureYour365.

The best way to improve your photography is to PRACTICE your photography! Why not practice with the support of a community?

If you are ready to be challenged, inspired, and work a little, this class is for you!

Each month you will be given one subject. Through guided lessons, you will photograph your subject in 4 different ways - two methods focusing on creativity and two focusing on the technical.  Each method offers a little more challenge than the previous! Along the way you'll receive critiques, assistance, and inspiration.

What will the challenges be each month? We'll start with aperture (in four different ways), we'll move to shutter speed. Expect to cover a month of light, a month of framing, and more! (Plus a few months where YOU get to help pick our focus and I'm writing the lessons SPECIFICALLY for everyone in class!)

Who is PRACTICE suitable for?

Class is intended for those with cameras with manual control over exposure, shutter speed, and ISO.

Anyone who wants to improve their photography will find something to Practice! You can choose to complete one of the monthly challenges or all four.

Class registration is open all year. Register today for access to the entire year.

  • One lesson  in PDF format each month, February 2014 through January 2015!

  • A LIVE webinar each month (with recordings if you can't attend)
  • Interactive class forum for people (like you) to share ideas, questions, and resources

You are so cool! I do not believe I have read through something like this before.
So wonderful to find somebody with a few original thoughts on this subject matter.
Really.. thanks for starting this up. This web site is something that is required on the web, someone with a bit of originality!

weblog posts in this sort of space . Exploring in Yahoo
I at last stumbled upon this web site. Reading this info So i’m glad to
exhibit that I have an incredibly just right uncanny feeling I discovered exactly what I needed.

problem. May be that’s you! Having a look forward to peer you.

  4. Susan Blackburn

I read the article on Sherry Billings this morning and am interested in this class. Will Katrina do it next year? I’m ready for it. I have already gained so much knowledge and technical skill from the 365 Project this year and am ready for the next step in 2016.

    • Hi Susan,
Practice will be available in ebook form very soon. For 2016 I have a new year long class planned. Details will arrive in October!

So glad you are enjoying your 365 Project!

  5. Is this a class for beginners? What class should a beginner take from you?

    • Hi there TJ,

This class is best if you are already shooting in manual mode. I’ll be offering a Holiday class in December and a new class in 2015 that will be perfect for you as a beginner. If you are on the mailing list, you’ll be the first to get information (and the best price) for classes.

  6. Hi Katrina, I’m interested in taking a class but it looks like all your classes are way underway, do you have any plans to start anything new and if so can you give your followers an idea of what you are going to offer? And if there isn’t anything else scheduled in the near future would I benefit from jumping into a session that has been in progress for many months. I was looking at the Practice but the basic stuff was covered in the early sessions, I’m sort of a beginner to photography and don’t know if I can handle the more advanced stuff. One more question, I’m thinking about doing the CY365 come 2015 however can I still post to your site now if I am just ‘practicing’ by using some of your suggested daily themes? Thank you so much, just love your site!

  7. Hi, Katrina, I too am interested in joining practice. I subscribe to your email list and am wondering if we will receive notice when the mid-year price is available? Thanks so much!

  8. Hi Katrina,
I just found you and your website in March and I love it! I’ve been caturing life, trying the prompts (I take big liberties with some of them!), printing them out at home and adding to a weekly engagement calendar. I’m having a lot of fun!
I’ve been listening to your pod casts (BTW, your new audio equiptment sounds GREAT. It’s really improved the listening experience!) and have decided I’d really love to sign up for your Practice class. We are going on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation in October and I’d like to sharpen my skills so I have a better chance to bring home some great photos (ok maybe memorable photos is more correct!)
I read your last post above and you mention an upcoming special for those on your mailing list. I receive your daily e-mails and I not seen the special. That said, I’ve looked for a button here and I see no way to register for the class. Are you able to help? I’d really like to get started soon.
    Thanks so much!

    • Cindy,
      So glad you found us!

I’m glad you commented because it looks like something is broken on this page! The price will be available within the week, just as soon as I fix whatever broke!

Thanks for being part of the CY365 Community!

      • Thanks for the warm welcome Katrina!
And I’m relieved to know that the class registration problem wasn’t just me. : ) I’m super excited to get started learning and practicing. I hope you are able to get everything fixed soon. (I’m still not finding a button).

  9. S Falls

I just came upon your website and was interested in your practice class. Do you offer the intro price for new people. If so, can you tell me how to obtain it. Would you be offering the intro price net year and should I wait til then to sign up?

    • Hi there,

Thanks for stopping by. I’m not offering the intro price anymore and this class won’t be offered next year. A special mid-year price will be available later this month for people on the CY365 mailing list. You can subscribe at the top to get access to the special price!

  10. Christy

I just recently found your website and I love your ideas for photographing daily. The Practice class looks like fun. Will you offer it again at the intro price? Is this a forever access class?

    • Glad you found us Christy! You will have forever access to class materials. The gallery is open for a year after class. The introductory price won’t be offered again.

  11. Ii thought I asked this question earlier and when I came back to check for a response I can’t see my question. I guess it didn’t save.

I see from your previous comments that it says that registration is still open for this class. Does that mean that i will have to play catch up, or that I will start at the beginning now and my class would end one year from now? Practice is the very thing I need the most right now with my photography!

    • I am also curious when the Exposure class will be offered again. I think my initial comment was actually over on that classes page. I am getting caught up your podcasts (just listened to episode 7 today) and I hate that I hear about classes that are not currently available. 🙂

I will also take this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoyed the webinar last Saturday. I was able to catch most of it and I was inspired and entertained. Thank you so much for offering such a great resource- and for free!

      • Exposure will be offered again at the end of April. Registration will open at the beginning of April. So glad you enjoyed the webinar! I had a blast and appreciate you being there!

    • Registration is open all year. The previous lessons would be available to complete as you can. The class is designed so that you can start at any point and follow along. Your class would end in January 2015 with everyone else.

  12. I just got my camera in October and have been shooting in AV & TV mode for about 2 months – is this the class for me? Or should I start with a different one?

    • You might want to start with Your Life Captured THrough The Lens. It will help you move to manual mode. Practice registration is open all year if you want to jump in after Your Life!

  13. I haven’t received any emails from Practice yet. I am able to get my 365 emails however. I double checked my receipt and I should be good to go.

    • Hi Addie,
It looks like your registration wasn’t completed. I’ve sent you an email with all of the details so you can complete your registration.

  14. Rhadonda

I may be too late as it is 9:00 CST. I have been shooting in manual for 2 weeks now. I have registered for Your Life. I don’t know if i am ready for the technical aspect of “Practice” though it sounds awesome. Do you explain the technical or just give the basics? If i am too late that is okay. Debating towards spending the money on two classes or saving for my next lens purchase ( :

    • Not too late! I’m in California, so it’s still early here 😉

The technical aspect of Practice is very step by step. If you can find the buttons on your camera, you can follow along.

Your Life digs more into the why and how of moving to manual. (It’s my most popular course.)

Registration will remain open for Practice will remain open for the rest of the year. The price will go up, but you can decide after you buy that new lens!

      • Rhadonda

Do you think i could handle both timewise? Would it be overload?

        • If you get started with Practice right away you could work through a few of the exercises before Your Life begins. Then if you keep up with the weekly lessons, it could be balanced. You’ll be busy though!

You’ll have forever access to both, if you do fall behind.

  15. Hi there … just enrolled and paid for the course Practice, but can’t log in. Wonder if maybe I didn’t finish the registration properly. I’ve registered and been receiving daily prompts for a little while now, so thought that I would be using the user name and password that I’d already set up, but keep getting told that they’re invalid. Can you let me know what I’m doing wrong please?

  16. Tracey Gehring

Katrina, is this one you can jump in at any time to take? Or is it from the “start date” only? I really wanted to take this one, but not possible for me at this time – so was wondering if possible to join the class at a later date etc… 🙂

  17. Just wanted to say that I think this class sounds pretty great and one I’d be interesting in taking. However, we are in the process of selling our house and making a move so the time just isn’t right for me. I’ll be hoping you are able to offer it again in the future. Thanks for the time you put into 365.

  18. sheila gill

I am thinking of enrolling; can you send an example of your .pdf so i can decide? Thanks!

    • Hi Sheila,
Thanks for being in touch. There is not a pdf available for preview at this point. Know that each month’s lesson is structured around one area of Practice. The four exercises work from the fundamental steps for the area being practiced to advanced techniques. They blend both creative and technical.

  19. Question: I took your exposure class in September. I loved it very much. I am wondering which class to take next. Practice or Capture Your Life? As far as skills go which one is next?

  20. Katrina, I’m interested in taking your class and was wondering if you could send me a sample lesson. I’m trying to decide whether to take this class or the Your Life Captured. Thanks so much.

    • HI DJ,
No sample available at this point. If you are new to manual mode, I’d suggest Your Life. If you shoot some in manual, and want to dig into bettering your skills then Practice would be for you.

Let me know if you have other questions!

  21. Dawn Symonds

Katrina: I am very interested in taking one of your classes but am not sure where I belong. I am a newbie photographer, but have recently completed a 5 week course on the basics. I AM shooting almost exclusively in manual, but am not completely comfortable yet. I am thinking either the Practice course or waiting until June to take your Exposure class if you offer it again. I’d really appreciate any advice you can offer. I am having so much fun posting to this 365 community, but would REALLY love to improve my skills! Thanks so much!

    • I think both will benefit you. If you are in for a 12 month, deeper investigation of your photography then I’d choose Practice. If you want more technical understanding of shooting in Manual then I’d wait for Exposure. Hope that helps!

  22. Ann Rasmussen

Katrina, I am really a novice when it comes to manual setting on my camera. I have a Nikon Coolpix P100 without DSLR. Would the Practice course be useful for me or way over my head?

  23. Hi Katrina: I’m really interested in taking a photography class this year. My main goal is to get myself off of “P” mode on my Rebel XT. Will Practice help me accomplish that goal or is it mainly inspiration on taking different kinds of photos? A topics list would be really helpful. Thx.

  24. Colleen

Hi Katrina: Will you please do the same for me as Darlene? I’d appreciate a sample lesson. Thank you!

  25. Darlene

Could you send me a sample of a lesson so I know if it is what I would want. Also, I never saw the ad until Jan. 8 so would I somehow be able to qualify for the intro price?

  26. Melissa C

I am interested in the class but would like to know more about the subjects covered.

  27. Rachel Pourchier

I am enjoying the 1st week of Exposure class; am considering your Practice class but could you help me a little more on your subjects for each month
    Rachel P

    • Hi Rachel,
So glad you are enjoying Exposure. The lesson for January will cover aperture/depth of field in four different ways, combining technical and creative methods. February will be all about shutter speed. I’ll be gathering topics for a portion of the year from class members to provide a really customized experience!
