Behind the Lens | Pam Scott

People come to an everyday photography project for so many different reasons, with so many different motivations. Behind the Lens is a monthly series that features Capture Your 365 community members who are focused on photographing and sharing the daily details and routines of their lives.

I’m thrilled to introduce you to the newest member of our Creative Team. The first time I saw Pam’s images in the gallery I could see her talent. I loved to study her careful placement of details and her fabulous use of light. I know can look through the CY365 Gallery and pick out a “Pam Photo” just by seeing the thumbnail!

I’m honored to share her photos in the daily prompts. She’s a wonderful addition to our team and a fabulous member of the CY365 community.Katrina Kennedy Sig  I know she will inspire you like she’s inspired me!

Meet Pam Scott.

What sparked your interest in photography?

I’ve always loved photography… all the way back to my Kodak Instamatic with the flash bulb. I had a 35mm Rebel film camera that I used while my kids were young. I think I tried manual once or twice.  The delay in shooting and seeing the results was too much for me, so I gave up.

I bought my first dslr eight years ago,  but was just too intimidated to take it off auto. When a friend asked me a little over a year ago to help her photograph military homecomings, that threw me into a panic. I needed more skills and knowledge for that kind of endeavor.

I began to research photography—I was hooked! I took a private lesson from a local photographer that ended in frustrated tears,  but I was bound and determined to figure it out. I took a couple more classes and somehow wound up at CY365. I was intrigued by the photo a day concept and thought it was just the thing I needed to help me keep practicing. It was frustrating in the beginning, but now I really enjoy it.

Call me crazy, but I check my email first thing in the morning (usually while I’m still in bed) so I can see what is in store, prompt wise, and how it might work with my day. Some days are easier than others, but I like that it pushes me beyond my comfort zone. This project has definitely made me slow down and notice the little details in my life. For that I am so grateful!

What camera do you use?

I am currently using a Canon 6D.

What is your favorite lens?

I have a 70-300mm that I love because I can get up close while being far back. My kids hate having their picture taken, so the farther away I am the easier it is to sneak in a shot or two. Lately I have been using my Canon 50mm f/1.4 . It’s such a nice size and for the everyday I find it works quite well. I also have a 100mm macro that I LOVE . That has opened up a whole new world for me.

What makes your happiest about your photography?

I get so excited when I am able to create a beautiful image! When the stars align and the image looks like my heart sees it, my soul sings!

When I first started this journey I took literally hundreds of shots to get what I wanted. Now, a year later, I feel like it’s taking me fewer attempts to get to something I’m satisfied with. I have so much to learn to get to where I want to go, but I feel like it’s getting a little bit easier.  And it’s just so much fun! Thanks to CY365 I have captured things I would never have thought to photograph. I feel like I am seeing the world in a whole new light.

What’s your favorite class at Capture Your 365?

I’ve taken most of Katrina’s classes, and I love them all. She has such a talent for explaining things in simple, easy to understand terms. Probably my favorite class was Your Holidays Captured Through the Lens. It gave me the ability to capture Christmas the way I felt it. I am looking forward to Practice!

  6. So nice to learn a little more about you. I, too, love your photos. They seem to pop out from the thumbprints. You always have great light. I’m inspired to hear you have only been in manual for over a year. I hope to be there someday. Thanks for sharing.

Such an inspiring interview! Pam – your images are truly lovely – I’m a total PJS fan : ) And I agree – definitely detectable in the thumbnails and the lighting is always amazing. I am convinced your home is perfectly positioned to soak in all our San Diego sunshine with perfect diffusion : ) Hope to meet in person soon!

  9. What a great interview! And very encouraging too for us CY365 take-it-off-manual newbies! I too now take the challenge to “spot a Pam Scott” photo in the gallery! She truly has a gift. I already told her I have a major “photo girl crush” and adore her style and talent!

  10. Oh the light in all your pictures, not to mention the interpretation of all the prompts, leaves me – I am going to say speechless – but I really mean awed! Absolutely lovely!

  11. Nice to read and very inspiring! Beautiful pictures!

Katrina is so right, I can pick your photo’s right from the thumbnails. Your lighting, impeccable ! Your photo’s have such a soft, kindness to them …. just like you !

  15. I am at the frustrated with “manual” right now. My new year’s resolution was, no, IS, to learn to use the manual side of my Canon Rebel. So, your interview has encouraged me this morning. AND, for some reason my daily photo prompts have stopped. Oh, how I do miss them!!!!! Thanks, Pam

    • Thank you! Hang in there… It will get better! I would try re-subscribing to the prompts… That’s what kept me going- that and the inspiration from the gallery and community. Good luck 🙂
