August 365 Photo Challenge List

Why Do You Take A Photo A Day?

August CY365 Photo Challenge List

Do you ever wonder why you keep taking a photo a day? Or maybe you’ve wondered why anyone would start this crazy project?

It all begins with one photo. It might not be the most amazing photo you’ve ever taken, but it’s a photo. A photo you’ve created of YOUR life. A perspective, place, and time no one else experiences but you.

Some days you will see the photo as soon as you rise from bed. You’ll think about it and know EXACTLY what you want to take and how to take it.

Other days you’ll forget about your photo until you are in bed ready to end your day. You may jump out of bed and find the smallest sliver of light to snap a photo. Or maybe you just stay in bed and take a phone photo of your bedside clock mocking you for being up so late.

Taking a photo every day for a year mimics life in that way. Some days will be easy and some days not. You’ll feel incredibly inspired for days at a time and then hit spells of nothing. Nothing looks photographable. Nothing seems interesting. That spell will end.

No matter how you approach this project or what camera you use, you’ll create an amazing journal of your life. Your life seen in a way only you can see it.

Maybe you’ll print your photos and hang them on the wall. Maybe you’ll keep them in a tidy file on your hard drive. Maybe you’ll tuck them into your Project Life or line them up in an album. There is no right way. There is only your way.

And that is good enough!

How can you use the list? Follow three quick steps!

Download the August Challenge List to your favorite device or print it for quick reference. I post mine right next to my desk.

Subscribe to the free daily emails for a prompt reminder and tips for each day’s prompts.

Go sequential if that’s your thing or pick one that inspires you. Go out on your own if you need to. There is no wrong way to use the prompts!

And really…if you need to skip a prompt…then skip it! It’s your project. Make it your own!

This month’s repeating prompts are:

August 10 – Self Portrait

August 17 – Color, this month we are Pink!

August 24 – A Portrait of a person

Create your image with whatever camera you have! Phone, dSLR, point and shoot.

Shoot what you can. Share what you can. No pressure.  Sharing helps keep you motivated all year long.

You can:

  • Tag them on Instagram or Twitter with #CY365.  (You can follow me @katrinakennedy so I can follow you!)
  • Upload them to the CY365 Gallery for a little gallery love.
  • Post them to our Flickr group.
  • Post them to the CY365 Facebook page.
You’ve got options!

  1. A few reasons: I use the prompts as a kind of puzzle. I will take photos for the 30/31 prompts as and when I see them and I always finish the puzzle.
Using my camera every day inspires me to learn new things about photography, try new things, practice new things.
It is a wonderful habit. I’m in my third year but the first one following prompts.

I totally agreed with Miriam, using the camera every day has built my confidence as a photography by leaps and bounds ! and yes … it is a wonderful habit !

this is a question not a comment.. is this with any type of camera? so if you use your dslr do you post them on instagram? i thought instagram was only for phone photos?

    • This is intended to be with any camera you have. The tags are meant to be used if you choose to post and if you use Instagram. We have people using many different cameras. And I’m with you, I only post phone photos to Instagram, but not everyone sees it that way!

Your e-mails are so inspiring and fun to read. I just wanted to let you know that I have saved, and frequently reread, your e-mail post from March 29 “You can do this”. And now I’m going to include todays, July 27 “What’s your Why” in my inspiration folder. Thank you again for all you do.

    • Thank you Patty. I appreciate you sharing this with me. I’m always more inspired to write knowing it really resonates with someone!

And yes, you can totally do this!

  5. I actually just started today. But my reasons to get out and make pictures is that I need to get more active to lose weight from a massive dangerous amount to something somewhat healthy. I needed incentive to do that, and making pictures of something sounds like it could do the trick. I’m far from good or anything but I do enjoy it :) I might not be able to really go out daily, but I’ll try. The prompts are helpful to get inspiration along the way :)

    • Today is a great day to start! I hope our list helps you to achieve everything you want. I know I enjoy my photos most when I’m out doing active things. Thanks for the great reminder to get on the move!

  6. I am participating in the Capture Your 365 challenge to improve my photography and to prepare me for a trip with Compassion to Mexico in January. The last two weeks have been crazy busy, but I finally printed off the August list and took a ‘delicate’ photo today. Thank you for providing the inspiration for all of these photos!

  7. Hi all! Just wanted to let you know if anyone is planning on doing a 365 project from their phone, there is a really cool and easy app that you can use that reminds you everyday to take your pictures, and also it stores them so that it lets you create a video slideshow with music of all your photos at the end of the year and share it with others on email, youtube, or Facebook! Its called Slideshow 365 and is available on iPhone and Android! Hope that helps!

  8. Florence
