Do You Choose The Story Or The Photo?
Posted by Katrina Kennedy on Jan 23, 2013 in 365, Blog | 6 commentsThere are days when the photo happens so easily. I know THE ONE as soon as I take it. And then there are the other days. The days when I have no idea which one to pick. The days I could go with two, but like the simplicity of saying THIS is the photo of the day.
It’s a nice problem to have. So much better than having only one I’m not happy with.
I ask opinions of those in the house. And sometimes they are stuck too.
It comes down to a big decision.
Choose The Story Or The Photo
The Story is a big one in our house. He’s made amazing progress. He can jump into the deep end now. No prodding. He’s eager. He flipped right over onto his back and off he went. There have been a lot of tears to get here. I’m so proud of him.
The Photo is so him. In a moment of quiet. I could make it a story, but this is much more about a quick captured moment. It only lasted a few seconds before he was off doing something else.
So there I am. Wondering. My 365 Project is about my life and our moments. I love to fill it with visually appealing, beautiful images. If I imagine myself looking back in twenty years I can see the value in both of them.
The prompt was Frozen. I’m considering them both moments frozen in time. A stretch, I know. You can see the rest of my project here.
So which would you pick? How would you make your decision?
I made my choice. LOVED reading your perspectives. I waivered with my choice. Zalaine’s words pushed me over the edge.

I would choose the photo, but I think you should choose the story. My sons are no longer children, and I know it is the stories I treasure most. Every bad photo I took of them (and most of them were bad) in action mean so much more to me now than the good portraits.
This is why I can’t do a 365 project. Some days I have several photos, and some days I have none. I would choose both
.
But if I were being a stickler about it, I’d probably use the story in my album, and put the photo in a frame.
I had this same dilemma just the other day. I went with the story because, for me, Project 365 is not only about the art of photography, but about my life. That said, I would still share online, and possibly frame or scrapbook the #2 photo.
I would pick the story.
The face. The Story will take care of itself…
I would try like crazy to combine both …. use the face and in the write up tell the story anyway – maybe he was reflecting on what a great day it had been because he jumped in the deep end – something like that.
Another thing I have thought about doing for myself is on days where I have more than 1 I love I thought I’d start a 2nd folder and at the end of the year use those photos in a collage either as my book cover/back or just as introductory/ending pages for the album.
In the I’d probably go with the face because (1) it’s horizontal and most of my shots are and (2) I have teenagers who hate to be photographed so getting a shot like that would be a “once in a blue moon” thing where as I know I can get shots like the jump at the next lesson.
Please come back and let us know what YOUR decision was!!
