January 365 Photo Challenge List

Happy New Year!

Are you ready to do this? A photo everyday for the next 365!

I love this challenge. Whether you take one photo or 365 you can celebrate taking the time to notice the details of your life. At the end you will have created a visual journal of who you are, what you do, and what you love.

What can you expect this year? How about a little repetition? Yep, each month we’ll repeat 4 prompts:

  • a self portrait
  • a color
  • a technical aspect of photography
  • a portrait or person
We’ll be challenged to change our approach each month, building our skills throughout the year.

2013 is going to be a great year.

How can you use the list? Follow three quick steps!

Download the January Challenge list to your favorite device or print it for quick reference. I post mine right next to my desk. Each month I post a new list to challenge you.

Keep it handy. It will help to keep you thinking about photos every day!

Go sequential if that’s your thing or pick one that inspires you. Go out on your own if you need to. There is no wrong way to use the prompts!

Need an example? January 1st’s prompt  is Resolve. Maybe you photograph the word. Or a list of goals you’ve created. Or the definition of the word. Or your running shoes prepped to help you out the door with new resolve.  Or maybe your eye catches a yellow flower in beautiful light. And you shoot it.

It’s your project. Inspiration can arrive in many ways. Go with it.

Create your image with whatever camera you have! Phone, dSLR, point and shoot. Whatever camera you have works.

Whether you take 31 photos this month or only three you’ve got options. Sharing helps keep you motivated all year long. You can:

You’ve got options!

  1. This is my first time to do a Project 365. I am very excited! Thank you for the prompts. This year will surely be wonderful!

  2. I love the selfie-prompt! We don’t put ourselves in front of the lens often enough.

  3. I want to improve my photography but also get some new ideas as I feel stuck! This also gives me a few extra blog posts per month on my blog, as I’ll be linking back to here. I know it’s not a blog thing, but I’ll be using it for that along with the FB page and gallery. :)

    • I love that idea Melissa! It really can be anything you want – print, blog, digital. It’s about capturing YOUR memories!

I’m looking forward to reading your posts!

  4. Joining in for the first time! Looking forward to improving my photography this year!

  5. Doing this for the first time. Quite excited….Loved the January 1st Prompt….

  6. I’ve been an avid amateur photographer for many years – even before digital photos…and just this year made the jump to a DSLR.

So hoping to learn a little more about my new camera (although I’m sure I’ll use all of them). I’ve tried 365 Photo Challenges before, and one busy week at school and I’d always feel like I was off track on the challenge.

So, since you post the entire month of challenges ahead of time, I may not get a photo each day, but I’m hoping for the equivalent of a photo each day for this challenge.

  7. This is my first time with this. I am no photographer but I would like to have more memories, as life presents many that are often forgotten. I hope to capture many and document them in a scrapbook. Thank you for such a wonderful idea.
    Cheers to the new year!

  8. i want to do this just hope that I can stick to it and learn more on photography while doing so.

  9. I always say that photography is one of my hobbies. I want it to be more than that, so here is my chance to jump in and learn more about it…and myself!

  10. Count me in! I love photography and am always looking for ways to improve and challenge myself. Seems like this is the perfect ticket. Thanks for the great daily prompts.

  11. 2013 may be a year of difficult medical challenges, so I’m hoping “Capture Your 365″ will provide me with a means of finding daily positive/happy moments that I may otherwise overlook! In my case, this isn’t as much about photo technique as it is about cherishing the little things in life.

  12. I’m excited for the challenge. My hope is that by doing this I will get my creative juices flowing!!

  13. I’ve tried and tried to maintain the 365, but it hasn’t happened yet. This year, I have a plan for decluttering, ridding, and redecorating my home into one that is full of the things I LOVE, so I plan on documenting this journey in 2013. It may not be a photo everyday but this is the plan.
I can use your wonderful lists to capture other photos as well and improve my photography. One never knows everything there is to know nor do we always have perfect photos, but as you’ve said, that IS life.
Thanks Katrina for all you do!

  14. I just got my first DSLR camera as a Chrustmas gift and am excited to take on this challenge to give daily purpose to my newly discovered photography adventure. Thank you!!!

  15. Tamara Hensley

I’ve tried to do the 365 in past years and have never made it to the end. I am determined this year to do it. I’m also looking forward to getting out of the box and really challenging myself. Looking forward to this!

  16. Beth Deegan

I am excited to find your Challenge! I have been into Photography for many years! I fractured my ankle at the beginning of October this year and still trying to heal from all the damage. I know this Challenge will help get me out of my funk and help with the healing process. I shoot with a CanonT1i and have several lens. I also use my iphone and am Instagramer addict! My name is Tntallgal on IG. I also have a FB page too! I really look forward to participating in this Challenge! And look forward to making new friends too! :-)

  17. Francesca

I am really excited to start this. I have never attempted anything like this before but it combines some of my favorite things my new camera, photography, learning and challenges. I can’t wait to see how this helps me in all the areas. I gave read orioles stories after their year and it is inspiring. I am going to photograph what speaks to me and lean on the tops and support here to help me when I am suck. My goal is to just use my Cannon but i can see the phone whipping out for convenience lol May we all have a blessed year. Happy clicking

  18. I can’t wait to start this challenge. I tried to do one on my own last year but lacked inspirations. I hope to grow as an artist and go outside my comfort zone and still be able to get good photos. Here’s to a wonderful 2013!

  19. I can’t wait to try this! I’ve done a lot more photography over the last couple of years than I have previously, and would like to get better at it.

  20. I don’t think I got my DSLR out at all last year. I was having fun with my point and shoot but mainly my iPhone and Instagram. I still plan on doing that, but I am thinking I will take one day a week and play with the Big Camera this year and use the prompts for the week to get me going for that day. I so love getting the daily emails with links to the tutorials you have for us to try. Thanks so much for doing this!

  21. Count me in too! I’m looking forward to the picture/day and the prompts will be very helpful in keeping me motivated. This is a great way to try new things and think out of my comfort zone when taking photos. Thanks, Katrina for all your hard work in organizing this.

  22. This will be my first project!! I would like to have a 2013 full of photo memories!!!

  23. I have been lazy with photo taking and need the push to get back into it. Hopefully this will inspire me.

  24. amanda kay tea

I started these photo lists back in october of this year (2012) and i find them so inspiring that i have kept with them. i dont think i’ll be doing a project life but i most certainly will be doing projects with my photos like i always do :) thanks for the inspiration Katrina :)

  25. I am in! :) It will give me a chance to challenge myself!
    J-Dawg

  26. I am doing something similur. I will have to try this as well. Thanks for the idea. I will do this with my new Fujifilm S4200 caer..

  27. Elizabeth

This is my third attempt. I hope to make it past April. Third time is a charm, right? Looking forward to this.

  28. I have attempted project 365 before only to fail miserably and get horribly discouraged. This year I am breaking it down into 52, 7-day periods and I hope that will help me not to get too overwhelmed by the enormity of it all. Thanks for the great list of prompts every month!

  29. Robbin Haigler

Looking forward to learning with you again this year, Katrina. I used your prompts in 2012 to learn about my first DSLR and photography in general. I really enjoyed your teaching style in the Your Holiday Class, too! Hoping to take advantage of the project this year to broaden and sharpen the techniques of photography. Thank you for your continued commitment to teaching . . . ‘see’ you lots more this year in the gallery!

  30. Sarah E

This is my first time doing something like this. 2012 wasa tough yr emotionally for me so I’m hoping to catch lots of good moments to look back on and remember the good things in 2013 . I can’t say if I’ll use a camera, phone, or iPad as it all depends on what I have in my hand when the mood hits :-)

  31. My goal is to learn more about photography using this 365 project method. I’m excited about the journey!

  32. What a wonderful and creative way to kick off the new year! This is one resolution I think I can stick to! I appreciate your prompts!! Thank you!

  33. Lolavix

This is my third project 365 and I am looking forward to having a place to come every day and share my photos with others who understand the challenges and the need to do this.

Happy New Year and good luck to all.

  34. I’ve participated in two of Katrina’s wonderful classes and am taking the plunge to participate in the new year. Looking forward to the inspiration & perspiration for I know there will be challenges along the way. Happy New Year, 365 community!

  35. Am I the only one having trouble opening the January inspiration list?

  36. I’m kind of jumping in at the last minute–this looked like fun, and I got a new camera for Christmas, so my main goal for the year is to use this to help me learn how to use it! (Also, so I can improve my photography skills in general.)

  37. My goal with this is to get really comfortable with our Christmas present from my parents- a new camera! I was looking for inspiration and found your list! I hope to also just take a few minutes each day and be creative and use that time for “me” time!

  38. Crystal

Trying to improve my photography, & although I have 4 beautiful children. That inspire photos daily, I was looking for more artistic ideas. Thank you, I look forward to this!

  39. I wish I found your list before I started my project this year. Anyhoo, it’s still early. I can still catch up. Thank you for the January challenge. (:

  40. Having fun with the projects – but my files are too big to post in the gallery. How do I make them Smaller?

  41. Christine D

I just found out about CY365 on Pinterest. Luckily we’re not too far
into the year. I LOVE taking pictures, and scrapbooking. This is going to be an awesome challenge. I look forward to improving my photography skills along the way.
    Thank you Katrina!

  42. My friend Sarah made me do this (lol)…I have a camera that lives in it’s lonely little camera bag, so I joined up to actually use and get better at using my camera (a Nikon CoolPix P500). Plus, I love creative photography, but when I get behind the lens, I can’t think of what to snap. This will help me get to making pictures, and hopefully the good will come ;-)

  43. Katrina, this is just what I needed. I am working on two projects this year that will take up so much of my time (scrapbooking-wise) and was disappointed that I wasn’t going to be able to do a book of photos. THIS is what I’m going to do! I’m starting late for the month, but i’m going to keep it simple and enjoy it. Thanks so much for the inspiration . . . again. ;O)

  44. Joining a bit late, i treid starting a 365 project on a blog for my website (www.mbrownphotography.co.uk/wordpress) but was struggling for ideas and insperation so im gonna give your list a shot and maybe be able to take enough shots to post different ones on here and my blog. I’m also aiming to improve my photography.

  45. Great idea! I did a 365 challenge in 2011 for both my blog and my photography. It helped me start a blog and I really improved my photography, especially when I finally started hitting the books to improve my techniques.

I’m not doing daily pictures anymore, but I love the muse in your list and am taking enough volume that I plan to edit pictures for each daily idea.

Thanks for the effort and ideas!

    Nancy

  46. I had wanted to do something like this for awhile, and while the only decent camera I have is my cell phone, it’s no less fun for me. Though I’m looking into a new Canon since the Vivitar I have, takes horrible pictures compared to my little Samsung cell phone (so sad!)

  47. I hope you will be posting February’s prompts soon??
    :)
