Has The New Worn Off Your 365 Project?
Posted by Katrina Kennedy on Feb 17, 2012 in 365, Blog | 4 commentsIs the new wearing off your 365 project? Are you finding your days filling up with activities but somehow none of them involve you taking your photo of the day?
Anyone who has worked on this project understands the dry spells. We all have those days that we remember at the very last moment that we’ve not taken our photo. This may be the point when you begin to consider giving up.
What can you do to make sure you keep taking your photos?
Give yourself a break. Your photos don’t need to be perfect. You are taking a photo EVERY DAY. That means some days you are going to be involved in other things. Some days you are going to be sick or tired.
Use whatever camera you have. It might be your phone. It might be a point and shoot. Just use what you’ve got.
Keep your camera within reach. Don’t put it in the bag where it so easily is out of sight and out of mind. You need to be able to have it as the visual reminder to grab it and take your photo. I like to keep mine near the kitchen. A central location in our house with many potential subjects.
Take a look back at your progress. To keep going the distance look back at what you’ve already done. When you see all of the photos you’ve created over the past weeks it might just be the push you need.
Print your photos. Go a step further than just looking at your photos. Print them. Post them somewhere you can see. Hold them. Put them in an album or scrapbook or start Project Life. Holding them will make them real (Okay, I need to take my own advice here.)
Ask for support and ideas. Ask your family to remind you. To point out ideas. Get them involved. Is your family tired of being part of your 365? Post in the CY365 Forum or in our Flickr group. You’ll find you are not the only one who may be experiencing a bump in the 365 road.
Get inspiration. Grab the 365 idea list. View galleries and see what others are doing.
Go for a walk. A daily walk if you need to. It will be good for your project and good for your body! What can be better than that?
Keep going. As my son likes to say, “persevere.” If you don’t make it, no worries. 365 can begin again on any day.
The most important thing is to record your memories. Capture the bits and pieces of your life so you can look back on them in the future.
That is what your daily effort is all about!

Thanks!! Just what I needed! I always like to usemy nice camera, to learn how to use it, but knowing the iPhone is “acceptable” takes the pressure off. And that’s self imposed pressure!
I’ve relied on my iPhone several days recently. I love the prompts, but one day last week I had a perfect opportunity (“conversation” on the day my book group met) but got so involved in discussion I didn’t take one photo!!! I was so bummed, but finally let it go and got a good shot of my hubby on the couch that night. Thanks for the pep talk. I’ll need it again I’m sure.
You are welcome Karen! Sometimes living life trumps photographing it!
I love this!!! Well said!! The new is still here for me but the last couple days I find real life trumping the prompt. I feel kind of “guilty” lol and still take pictures to meet the prompt, but I lost sight of the fact that this project is about capturing my life – not following the prompts. This was just what I needed to hear to make it okay in my somewhat OCD mind to use the picture I choose to use as my picture of the day!
