The Accidental 365 Project | Kerry Halasz Guest Post
Posted by Kerry Halasz on Jan 9, 2012 in 365, Blog, Phoneography, Photography | 14 commentsThe iPhone in my purse has given me a gift. I have unwittingly become a member of the 365 community. I always thought it would be pretty great to take a photo every day to remember the important or mundane details of my days. But it was difficult for me. I use a camera for business. To have it with me all the time made me feel like I never had a break from work!
Look at me now, though! I have accumulated more than a year’s worth of a trail of my whereabouts, activities and travels. It’s a start. And I’m so happy to have these images. The challenge to me is, as I’m sure it is to a lot of you, what to do with them?
I’ll share one of my projects with you. I’m very lucky to have access to a beautiful system of walking/biking/running trails near my town. They were constructed through a wetlands area in order to protect them from development. The paths are planked or concrete, gently curved and surrounded by woods, water and overgrowth. Stunning!
I take to the trails often, 4 or so times per week at least. As I walk out the door, I grab my iphone and put it in my pocket. Every walk presents a different perspective. Early morning light and the long shadows of the afternoon suck me in. Mid-day magnifies the sun in the trees. And the seasons change, of course.
I have around 150 images of the trail. They are all cropped to a square. Most were taken with Hipstamatic although I do use Camera+ as well. I process them with not much consistency because well, I’m not very consistent! Right now I’m in the process of choosing nine of my favorite photos and will have them printed on metallic paper sized to 5×5. I’m going to hang them in a grid in my office so I can gaze upon my favorite paths whenever I feel the urge.
I guess there are a lot of ways to Capture Your 365! Think of something consistent in your life that you’d like to record as time goes by.
Happy iPhoning until next month!

What beautiful images of your trails! A very inspirational post!
Thank you Jean, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
beautiful pictures! I too use an iPhone for my daily pictures. It’s always with me and with all the fun apps, it’s pretty much brainless. While my picture might not be technique perfect, that is not my goal. My Project 365 is to create a picture dairy of my life. The iPhone is perfect!
thanks for sharing your pictures!
I think that’s a great goal. Imagine how much fun it will be 5 years from now to look back at life! Thank you for your kind comment
Thank you Kerry for sharing your story of 365. You are right! Capturing a moment in a day is what it is about, and sometimes the technique will be there, and other times it will just be what it is…a moment caught with the ease of the iPhone. Your photos are beautiful!
Opal, thank you! The nice thing is, technique or no, they are all little bits of time to remember
Variations, unique images of trail, path, journey–quite marvelous, Kerry! Fab guest post!
Many thanks, Marnie! I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
I remember so well sharing this trail with you… having our many talks along the way, and of course stopping to take gorgeous photos!! I MISS IT and we will walk it or ride it together again! AND, thanks to you I was introduced to Katrina’s site and also started the 365 journey. Ric is going to throw in some photos here and there and do it with me. It’s day 9!!
Miss you,
Mary Anne
I miss you! I loved our bike rides so much. My bike is getting dusty. So happy you (and Ric) are joining in here. I’ll see you vicariously that way

These are wonderful, and I love your idea of putting them in a grid where you can see them often. What a great lift during your work day that will be. Thanks for a great post.
Thanks so much, Deirdre!
Wow! Beautiful trails and photos. Thanks for sharing.
I never tire of that trail. Thank you
